TACTICAL HOME SAFETY
PERSONALIZED IN-HOME TRAINING FOR HOME DEFENSE
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHO ARE YOU AND WHY SHOULD WE LEARN FROM YOU?
Tactical Home Safety is a small family-owned business currently based in Vero Beach, Florida. We strongly believe that everyone has the right to be safe in their own homes and that protecting our kids is our most important responsibility. We started this business to assist others who share those beliefs.
We also believe that anyone who has chosen a profession that requires them to be armed, anyone who chooses to legally carry a gun for self-defense and anyone who chooses to legally defend their families inside their homes with guns, should be trained to a high standard and then conduct regular, effective practice. Often, this does not occur and that can be unsafe for everyone.
Sean, your main instructor, is an Australian army combat veteran and former Special Forces (SF) soldier who served for over 32 years in various forms of military service including as a full-time regular army soldier as well as a reservist and a reservist on full-time service. Prior to being granted permanent residence in the USA in September 2022, he also worked for 10 years as a professional firefighter where he became a rescue specialist and completed advanced medical and life support training. He continued his military service during that time as a reservist, remaining within Special Operations where he did several more periods of the Australian equivalent to active-duty service and continued to teach, coach and mentor soldiers and other tactical officers in a variety of advanced skills including all aspects of shooting from sniping and long range to close range combat and CQB shooting. He is a calm and relaxed instructor who will give you a complete understanding of the techniques he teaches so you can understand WHY you are doing them.
He is also an NRA certified instructor in CCW, pistol, rifle, shotgun and personal defense inside the home. However, none of the training offered on this website has anything to do with the NRA and is not NRA approved training.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN YOUR TRAINING?
Due to legal requirements, we can only train US citizens and lawful permanent residents. Proof of immigration status must be provided before training begins. You must also be legally able to be in possession of firearms.
In Florida, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Requirements to Purchase a Firearm (state.fl.us) there are ten categories of persons who are not eligible to purchase or possess a firearm under federal law (Title 18, United States Code 922(g)(1)-(9), (n)). They are:
Convicted of a felony (or equivalent).
Fugitive from justice.
Unlawful user or addicted to a controlled substance.
Adjudicated mentally defective or involuntarily committed to treatment.
Illegal alien.
Dishonorable discharge from the US Armed Forces.
Renounced United States citizenship.
Active protection order (restraining order, injunction for protection, etc.)
Convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
Under indictment or information for a felony.
In addition to federal law, Florida law prohibits persons who:
Are adjudicated delinquent of a crime that would have been a felony if committed by an adult until the age of 24 or until record is expunged.
Receive “Adjudication Withheld” on any felony or on a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and three years has not yet lapsed since the completion of sentencing provisions.
Were recently arrested for a potentially disqualifying crime which has not been dismissed or disposed of in court.
If you or anyone intending to participate in training fall into any of those categories, we are unable to train you.
I AM COMPLETELY NEW TO ALL OF THIS. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Firstly, welcome! We have a solid beginner program that introduces you to the tools and equipment you will need and puts you at ease with firearms. We will teach you complete lessons about safety and weapon handling. You will use a combination of real guns with drill rounds, replica air soft weapons and laser training systems until you and I are confident enough in your skill to go live. Contact us and we can help you.
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN TRAIN IN ONE CLASS?
We usually only provide training for a family of one or two adults at a time to maintain the personal attention that each require. However, we do have some flexibility with that depending on available resources. Contact us with your needs and we will come up with a plan to meet them.
HOW LONG DO YOU RECOMMEND WE TRAIN FOR?
There are no quick and easy shortcuts to develop complex skills. We recommend you practice some aspect of shooting, whether it be physical or mental skills or just general wellbeing exercises daily, if not several times per day. In terms of what we can offer you, we provide one day introductory courses for complete beginners, as well as 2 to 5-day packages, or longer if required. We are ultra flexible. It depends on what you want to learn and how much time you have to learn it. A beginner with the right aptitude usually takes 3-5 days to understand the basics and to develop their skills to a point where they will be confident enough to defend their home and family. However, even half a day of training will improve your abilities and show you what else there is to learn.
HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?
This depends on where you are located and how long you want to train. We have to consider factors including the cost of travel to your location and accommodation requirements, and we also consider the number of students and the duration of the training. If you live on the east coast of Florida between Melbourne and West Palm Beach, there will be no additional travel or accommodation costs. Contact us and we will calculate a training fee for you. We also give discounts to veterans, first responders and single parent families as well as a discounted rate for multiple days of training.
DO YOU INSTALL ALARM SYSTEMS AND CAMERAS?
No. According to Florida law, you need to be licensed to install alarm systems. A homeowner may legally install their own system, provided it is not going to be connected to a remote monitoring service provider. If that is the intent, even the homeowner cannot install it. We recommend you get a professionally installed alarm system. However, we will show you some simple, relatively inexpensive devices that can greatly increase your security.
DO YOU DO CONCEALED CARRY PERMITS?
The short answer is yes, but there is more to understand. In Florida you no longer require a permit to carry a concealed pistol. There are still advantages to obtaining a permit - it will eliminate the 3 day wait when purchasing a firearm and it allows you to carry legally in reciprocating states who recognize Florida permits. When you apply for your permit, you must provide them with a certificate as proof of formal instruction. There are several ways to obtain that certificate. You can do an express course at a gun show in about an hour. You can do training at any number of ranges that takes only a few hours. The training is more about the legal aspects of carrying a gun rather than the actual shooting and pistol handling skills required. As an NRA certified pistol instructor, i can conduct the NRA basic pistol course for you. The course is set at 8 hours. At the completion of that course, you will be issued with a certificate that meets the requirements of the State of Florida to then apply for a concealed weapons permit. However, even that course does not teach you how to carry concealed or draw from the holster. If you are going to carry concealed, we strongly recommend you seek professional instruction and conduct regular training in the specific skills required to carry concealed. We can help you with that.
CAN OUR KIDS JOIN IN THE TRAINING?
The firearm and tactics training will generally be focused on the adults who are going to be defending the kids. However, as the kids are a key part of the family and need to know their part in any emergency, they are certainly encouraged to be part of the relevant sections of training that will be conducted. I have found that kids younger than 12 usually aren't old enough to understand the details of the training, but they should still understand their role. In the contact form, inform us of the age and intent for your kids and if you want them to participate in training and we can find a solution.
WHAT HOURS DO YOU WORK?
We usually work weekdays only and can program training at any time of the day or night. We always save one day of the weekend for the Lord and our kids. However, exceptions can be made. We encourage afternoon and night training as you need to be able to function at all hours and in all light conditions. Contact us with your requirements and we will find a way to accommodate them.
WE LIVE IN ARIZONA. CAN YOU TRAVEL HERE TO TRAIN US?
Yes. We can travel to most places to train. However, every state has different regulations regarding firearms and training guns, so we would have to examine the laws at your location before we book. We generally avoid California, New York, Colorado, New Jersey, Washington DC, Illinois, Minneapolis and some other individual cities of similar characteristics to those mentioned. However, if you do live in those places, we recognize you may be the most in need of help and we may be able to do something for you. Contact us and we will get back to you with what we can do.
WHAT LANGUAGES DO YOU CONDUCT TRAINING IN?
I only speak English, and even then, it may pay you to watch Bluey, Steve Irwin, or Crocodile Dundee to tune your ear in to my funny accent.
