Victims of home invasion often report total surprise and lack of warning when things go wrong. It is generally accepted that you have less than 10 seconds to react before you are likely overwhelmed.

Reviewing video footage of actual home invasions and understanding your threats will help you respond effectively. With that in mind, how long does it take to access your firearms and ammunition? Are they accessible to you quickly but still not accessible to intruders and kids?

The classic layering of defenses including alarms, cameras and sensors will give you the maximum amount of time possible to respond to intruders. Delaying them and making it as difficult and noisy as possible to enter your home will extend your time to react to protect your family.

If you live in a close-knit or gated community, working with your neighbors to develop a community safety plan will increase collective security.
